Dr. Hew is a Consultant Endocrinologist in Puchong Medical Specialist Centre (PMSC) and Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC), Malaysia.
He is active professionally in the role of trainer and teacher. He is an examiner for Endocrinology Trainees in Malaysia. He is an instructor for Bone Densitometry for ISCD and a visiting lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia. He has also been a member of committee of various Clinical Practice Guidelines in Malaysia including Diabetes Mellitus, Osteoporosis, Thyroid Disease and Growth Hormone.
He is presently the President of the Malaysian Osteoporosis Society and the President of the Asian Federation of Osteoporosis Societies (AFOS) for 2015-2017. He is also the advisor to MDES.
He is the Chairman of the Independent Ethics Committee in SJMC since its inception. He was also a member of the Medical Advisory Board from 2007-2011 for which he held the post of Secretary from 2009-2011.
He qualified from medicine in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1987. He was awarded the Fellow of Royal College of Physician in Edinburgh (FRCP) in 1998 and the Fellow of the Australasian College of Physician (FRACP) in 1996. He obtained the Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1997. He was the recipient of the National Australian Postgraduate Scholarship and the Novo Nordisk Scholarship from the University of Melbourne.
In 1996 he joined University of Malaya as a lecturer. He founded the Lipid Research Laboratory. In 1999, he was promoted to Associate Professor of the Department of Medicine. He is active in medical research publishing 47 papers in peer reviewed journals and 93 abstracts.
